Course description

The course is an educational resource for people who work for an airline or ground handling agent but may have limited experience with commercial aircraft operation. The participants will examine aspects of safely working around aircraft, how aircraft are designed and constructed, aircraft airworthiness, key aspects of modern aircraft systems, and basic engineering information.

The information provided throughout this course will assist the participants with their work by making them more knowledgeable and confident about aviation concepts and aircraft operation, plus providing strategies for working safely around aircraft and being part of an aviation team.

Learning outcomes

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Apply basic strategies for working safely around aircraft, including avoiding danger areas, the importance of personal protective equipment, and the responsibility of all staff to proactively report incidents, accidents, and safety deficiencies
  • Recognize positive and negative aspects of human performance and limitations, communication, teamwork, and other basic human factors in themselves and their fellow team members
  • Define simple elements of a commercial aviation system, including large aircraft public transport, charter and cargo operation, and the role of regulators, businesses, and individual employees in air transport
  • Recall fundamental concepts about aircraft design, construction, and airworthiness and the life cycle of a large commercial aircraft
  • Identify key aspects of aircraft structure and systems, including the role all team members play in keeping an aircraft serviceable and earning revenue

Who should attend

  • Airline/cargo/charter employees who work in operational roles and have a need to understand more about aircraft and the aviation system, or as a course that may lead to further study in the topic areas
  • Airline/cargo/charter employees who work in non-operational roles such as finance, human resources, IT and have a need to understand more about aircraft and the aviation system, or as a course that may lead to further study in the topic areas
  • New airline/cargo/charter employees who may use this course as an induction into the industry, or as a course that may lead to further study in the topic areas
  • Airline/cargo/charter employees or team leaders who may use further knowledge in the topic areas as a pathway to promotion
