Understanding Airport Operations
This course will provide participants with an understanding of the many aspects required in the processing of passengers transiting through an airport.


Course description
Airports are complex ecosystems with sophisticated operations that ensure a smooth travel experience for passengers. The operational areas covered apply to all airports, the difference being related to the scale of the operation which will be commensurate to the number of passengers and aircraft movements.
This course will provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of the many aspects required in the processing of passengers transiting through an airport. It will also cover the legislation that airports must adhere to with particular emphasis on safety management.
Learning outcomes
At the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Understand the interaction between the airport operator and the stakeholders
- Be aware of the legislation which airports and stakeholders must adhere to
- Understand the flow process that will safely allow passengers either leaving by aircraft or by transport to use the airport facilities

Meet your instructor
Gordon Griffiths
Gordon Griffiths is an Airport Management and Airline Operations Consultant, with over 40 years of experience in the aviation industry.
Gordon was most recently the Head of Airport Operation Compliance at the Abu Dhabi Airports Company from May 2015 to May 2017. Abu Dhabi Airports company owns and operates 5 airports in the UAE. Prior to this, Gordon spent 8 years working with IATA, International Air Transport Association, an international trade organization that represents some 275 airlines worldwide. Gordon was a Lecturer at the IATA from June 2013 to April 2015 and was the Head of Airport Development for the Asia Pacific Region from September 2007 to June 2013.
Previously Gordon was the Customer Services Director of BAA International, operates in aviation sector and holds stakes in several airports. Gordon served in this capacity from June 2005 to April 2007. From December 2003 to March 2007 Gordon was the Head of Airside Delivery at London Heathrow Airport. Before this he was the Managing Director at Staverton Airport from August 2001 to August 2003.
Gordon spent ten years at the Manchester Airport Group and divided his time there via serving as Head of Terminals, Airside, Security, Cargo Development and Customer Services, in the period beginning January 1991 and ending June 2001. Gordon was the Airport Duty Manager and Passenger Services Manager at Luton Airport from June 1985 to December 1991. Prior to this, Gordon was the Head of Airside Operations at Jeddah international Airport from May 1981 to May 1985.
Gordon is committed to the continuous improvement in safety standards and in the generation of future business opportunities using multi-skilled background and experience gained in senior airport management and airline association positions.
With extensive experience in both airports and airlines, Gordon adopts a balanced perspective that he applies to his global lecturing assignments.
