Course description
This course provides participants with a comprehensive introduction to the fundamentals of air cargo operations, focusing on tariff rules, regulations, documentation, and procedures. Designed for professionals looking to build a strong foundation in air freight handling, the course covers the structure and use of The Air Cargo Tariff (TACT), rate calculation, and the correct issuance of Air Waybills (AWB).
Through practical exercises and real-world examples, participants will learn how to apply industry terminology, handle special cargo categories, and understand both carrier and country-specific regulations. The training also introduces e-Freight concepts and digital processes shaping the future of air cargo operations.
Participants must have access to TACT ONLINE throughout the course.
Participants enrolled in this class will receive access to the Starting Out in Air Cargo – Basics for Newcomers to Logistics video course 14 days before the live sessions. Completion of this video course is required before Day 1 of the training.

Meet your instructor
Paul Backstrom
Paul Backstrom is an aviation expert with more than 30 years of diversified experience in Air Cargo.
He worked at Alitalia Airlines in the roles of Cargo Customer Service Supervisor-JFK, Operations Manager – N.A., Marketing Manager - N.A., and Director of Cargo Customer Service - Americas. During his time at Alitalia Airlines, Paul was responsible for implementing quality standards for operational and customer service departments at eight North American locations, developing the annual sales quota (+ US $ 70 million), monthly results analysis and forecasts as well as overseeing the development, alignment and implementation program for establishing the Customer Service entity and identity for Alitalia Cargo in the Americas.
Paul Backstrom also worked in Freight Forwarding for Walker International Transportation, Globe Express Services, and IJS Global. Among other responsibilities, he was in charge of equipment procurement, facility certifications training, regulatory compliance, and liaising with the TSA.
He has been involved in training for over 10 years addressing audiences in various locations around the globe.
