Course description
Aviation is one of the world’s most globally interconnected industries - and its safe and efficient functioning depends on a harmonized system of international rules, authorities, and operational frameworks. This course provides a clear and structured introduction to how the global aviation system works, from its legal foundations to the modern regulatory environment that governs international air transport.
Participants will explore the origins of aviation regulation, the role of the Chicago Convention, and how ICAO develops the Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs) that enable worldwide interoperability. The course also examines major global conventions, regulatory trends such as liberalisation, and the authorities responsible for shaping civil aviation across borders.
To complete the picture, the course introduces essential aviation fundamentals, helping participants understand common terminology, operational concepts, aircraft categories, and the principles of flight that underpin modern aviation.

Meet your instructor
Jonathan Sinclair
Jonathan Sinclair gained a degree in Human Biology with an elective in Psychology prior to commencing his career as a commercial pilot with flying several thousands of hours flying for both short and long haul carriers. Further to this he also works as a lecturer at the University of West London, teaching various subjects from human factors in aviation, and contemporary issues to talent management.
Passionate about safety and building a better future for aviation, Jon enjoys interacting with students both currently working in the field or looking to get into the industry, he has also developed iOS apps to assist commercial pilots with their systems knowledge of various Boeing and Airbus types.
